Wrangel Island and the Russian Far East

We travelled on the Spirit of Enderby to Wrangel Island, departing from the port of Anadyr in the Russian Far East. The journey to Anadyr was long and there are no direct road links from Moscow; indeed Anadyr is nine time zones east of Moscow and very remote. The crew and expedition staff of the Spirit of Enderby were first rate and complemented perfectly by Mark Carwardine, Joe Cornish, Katie Murray, Rachel Ashton and Chris Breen. The entire area of Chukotka, including Wrangel Island, is extremely remote and fascinating, and Wrangel Island is a major site of denning Polar Bears, one of the main species we hoped to see on this trip. We did see many bears with some exceptional encounters, and also large numbers of Walrus, Humpback, Grey and Minke Whales, Beluga, Musk Ox and more Arctic Ground Squirrels than we could count.

A Common Guillemot taking to the sea

ChukotkaPreobrazheniya BayBrunnich's Guillemot

  • A Common Guillemot taking to the sea
  • A splendid Tufted Puffin swimming in Preobrazheniya Bay
  • A nest with a view for this Kittiwake on the bird cliffs at Preobrazheniya Bay
  • Two Brown Bear cubs-of-the year had become separated from their mother in Preobrazheniya Bay
  • The two cubs were calling loudly as they climbed around on the rocks
  • Peeping at us while calling for its mother
  • About to take to the water following their mother's path - they were reunited later
  • The view along the shore at Yttygran Island with some of the whale bones visible in the distance
  • Arctic Ground Squirrles were busy collecting food and nesting materials
  • Munching on some vegetation
  • Some of the erect whale ribs in Whale Bone Alley
  • There were many Grey Whales feeding in the shallow waters near Yttygran Island
  • Strange to think that we may have seen these same whales in Baja - they migrate to the waters of Chukotka to feed
  • More nesting material!
  • Arctic Ground Squirrels are very vocal, and very territorial
