Pantanal 2015

We visited the Pantanal in September 2015 on an Exodus tour led by the irrepressible and enthusiastic Paul Goldstein. We had some amazing wildlife encounters, most notably observing a pair of Jaguars which were mating. This led to extremely vocal and aggressive interactions between the pair, and of course exceptional viewing for us. They were at the end of the mating cycle and the female seemed to have had enough! The day afterwards we saw her on her own and in hunting mode after a week or so without food. Overall a wonderful trip.

More aggression

PantanalJaguar

  • Our first view of the mating couple, the male deeper in the undergrowth watching his female
  • Peeping out from the tree roots
  • The male was huge and rather battered with a missing ear and numerous scars
  • It all seemed peaceful at times as they sat by the river
  • A warning snarl!
  • The face only is mother could love! He had clearly been in many encounters
  • He followed the female wherever she went, to her obvious displeasure
  • He was not getting the hint!
  • She really was making a point!
  • Calm again, but the male would not take his eyes off the female
  • More aggression
  • She was indicating her willingness to mate again
  • Post-coital niceties were not their strong point!
  • Mostly the aggression was limited to vocalisation and snarling
  • Clearly she felt threatened at times by the male who was considerably larger than she was
